Ikhwanis 'abduct' woman in Bandipore

Bandipore: The abduction of a woman, allegedly by pro-government gunmen sparked off protests in Bandipore district of North Kashmir on Sunday. Reports said hundreds of people of Chaliven and Aragam villages of the district today staged massive demonstrations against the abduction of a woman, allegedly by pro-government gunmen, popularly known as Ikhwanis on Wednesday.
Chanting anti-Ikhwan slogans, the protesters marched through to the main town where they staged a Dharna. The protesters also blocked Srinagar-Bandipore road for several hours demanding punishment for the Ikhwanis who abducted the woman.

The woman, a mother of six children has been identified as Bibi Jan, wife of Muhammad Shafi Baneya of Chaliven.

“The woman was in search of her cattle when the Ikhwanis abducted her . The Ikhwanis were wearing masks to hide their identity,” Nazir Ahmad, a protester told Kashmir Dispatch.
“We searched for the woman everywhere, but couldn’t find her,” he added.

Another protester wishing anonymity due to fear of reprisal from the pr-government gunmen said that two of the abductors were hailing from the neighboring Sumblar village. He identified the duo as Mohammad Ashraf Khan and Ejaz Ahmad.

“My wife has been abducted by the Ikhwanis for the money. The six Ikhwanis, active in the area have unleashed a reign of terror,” Bibi’s husband, Mohammed Shafi Baniya told Kashmir Dispatch.
“They (Ikhwanis) have made the lives of people miserable. I’m deeply worried about the safety of my wife,” he added.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Bandipore Shamsher Hussain said police has launched a manhunt to trace the woman, allegedly abducted by the pro-government gunmen.
“Four people have been arrested in this connection so far. Two of them are said to be Army sources,” Hussain said, adding “We’re trying our best to trace the woman. Investigations in this case are in full swing,” Hussian added.- Kashmir Dispatch
